Tropical Storm Sendong

Tropical Storm Sendong (international name: Washi) ravaged Mindanao, slamming it with devastating rains and unleashing flash floods and landslides that have left a horrifying trail of destruction. As of 12PM, the death toll has reached 720 (Cagayan De Oro 346, Iligan City 279, Bukidnon 47, Negros Oriental 37, Lanao del Norte 9, Compostela Valley 5, Zamboanga del Norte 3, Surigao del Sur 1). Most of the dead were asleep in the middle of the night on Friday when raging floodwaters pounded their homes from rivers and cascaded
from mountain slopes following 12 straight hours of heavy rains in Mindanao. Drowning has been identified as the main cause of death. Sendong affected 21 municipalities, 78 barangays and 13,924 families (63,779 persons), with 245 injured and 807 reported missing. 3,422 houses were totally or partially damaged and there are still 38,332 persons housed in evacuation centers to date.
There are currently 7,431 persons in 4 evacuation centers in Iligan City, which was consumed by flashfloods last night after the heavy downpour of rains. Cagayan De Oro, which has now been placed undera state of calamity, experienced 180 mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours, which has led to massivefloods in 23 of its 80 barangays, leaving about 20,000 residents in evacuation centers. Prior to theonslaught of Sendong in Zamboanga del Norte, about 143 persons had already evacuated their houseswhich were destructed by flash floods that swept the municipality of Polanco as well as Dipolog andDapitan cities. Dapitan River had overflown early yesterday morning which flooded several barangaysin Dapitan.
Philippine Red Cross (PRC) maintains strict 24-hour monitoring of all situations in Mindanao, whilenearly 700 PRC staff and volunteers deployed in the field are conducting detailed assessments. Searchand rescue teams have been mobilized and hot meals have been prepared and distributed in evacuationcenters. Welfare desks, psychosocial support and first aid stations have been situated in the evacuationcenters for affected families. PRC has provided support by giving food packs, sleeping materials,hygiene kits, dinnerware, water containers, body bags and slippers.
Sendong is the 19th tropical cyclone to lash the Philippines this year. As we wage this battle againstdisasters, we are appealing for immediate cash assistance to continue providing relief and recoveryefforts for all affected communities. Cagayan de Oro flood 2011

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Dec. 18 (PIA) -– The death toll due to flooding in the city of Cagayan de Oro now rose to 252.
This was according to the official report the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) region 10 office at 5:00 a.m today.

Twenty three (23) persons were already identified while identities of the other 229 died are yet to be established. The bodies are now at the different funeral homes in the city.

RDRRMC said all the immediate kin of the reported fatalities are currently being attended by the concerned local government unit and disaster council in the city.

Office of Civil Defense(OCD)Regional Director Ana Cañeda said 22 barangays in the city were affected with flashfloods leaving many residents trapped on the rooftop and walls of their homes, power and water outrages.

While some residents took refuge on trees, others had to climb nearby storey buildings to avoid being swept away by the flood waters. Buildings and household items such as television sets and fridges were destroyed and swept away by the flood waters.

The heavy downpour, that started about 4:00 p.m. Friday and lasted until about 3:00 a.m. Saturday, brought almost every activity in the capital city to a halt.

Some businesses had to close down because the flood waters had taken over their premises and also of the power and water outages.

Walls were broken down while wooden structures and even some buildings, particularly those on water courses, were destroyed by the floods.

Military personnel and other rescue teams used boats to rescue some of the trapped residents, especially in areas where flooding was very extensive.

Cañeda, on the other hand, said due to communication problems as a result of power outages, cities of Valencia, Iligan and Ozamiz are yet to submit their reports and damages are still to be determined.

RDRRMC is led by Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Northern Mindanao, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG)-10, National Economic Development Authority (NEDA)-10 and other line agencies of the government including military and police commanders.

The OCD, RDRRMC, and all concerned branches of the government, including the private sectors are now joining hands and efforts in giving relief assistance to the flood victims.

Sendong, the 19th storm to hit the Philippines this year, has made another landfall in the vicinity of Puerto Princesa city and is now heading towards West Philippine Sea. (PIA-10)

THE COMPANY

Founded in 1978, Hans Brumann Inc. (HBI) started as a small jewelry shop in Makati that catered to Manila's elite and foreign expatriates. It was an exclusive shop that dealt more on made-to-order items designed by Mr. Hans Brumann, rather than retail purchases. All jewelry made were timeless masterpieces with contemporary designs and exceptional craftsmanship set in platinum, 18k or 14k yellow, gold, white gold or both. Initial concentration and specialty were in pieces made with South Sea Pearls, Mother of Pearl and platinum. Parasat Cable TV, Inc. started as an electronics retail store and repair shop established in 1976 by Engr. Elpidio M. Paras. It was known then as Paras Industrial Systems. It also offered customized music cassette tape recording and video (betamax) rental. As an electronic shop, Paras Electro installed sound system of various disco houses in Mindanao. To name a few, Salamin Disco and Alta Tierra in Cagayan de Oro, Hotel Rio in Iloilo and Xenon disco in Davao. In Cagayan de Oro, he introduced the concept of putting a TV/VCR in restaurants, showing the latest sports and boxing championships, way before cable TV became a common fixture in every home.

In 1985, Engr. Paras started manufacturing satellite dishes until finally in 1986 his satellite receiving system was able to capture the EDSA Revolution, which was being beamed for the first time worldwide by CNN. This provided Cagayanons the first glimpse of the media revolution wherein live events can now be beamed across the globe in real time.

He then started building bigger dishes to capture the very weak signals beamed by the early Intelsat series. In just a matter of three years, rich businessmen and entrepreneurs from all over the Philippines began ordering satellite dishes from Engr. Paras.

In 1989 thru and Executive Order 205 signed by the Pres. Cory Aquino, the cable industry was deregulated. It was this year when the cable operators fledged. Cable operators all over the country started to order satellite dishes from Engr. Paras. Among the first cable operators to order was Sen, Ramon Magsaysay, Jr. the senator’s cable operation covered the provinces of Olongapo, Bicol and Batangas.

In 1991, with an initial investment of P200,000 Engr. Paras established Parasat Cable TV, Inc. it was (and still is) the forerunner of cable TV in Mindanao. Parasat Cable started its operation at the backyard of the residence of Engr. Paras with less than 10 employees, mostly fresh graduates and on-the-job trainees from technical schools. It began by installing cable lines in the subdivision where they were located, offering only 12 channels. It has since expanded its coverage in Cagayan de Oro City and nearby municipalities. Parasat also acquire cable companies nearby areas.

To date, Parasat Cable TV has coverage in the following areas: entire Cagayan de Oro City, municipalities of Opol and Tagoloan. It has established branches in Malaybalay and San Carlos (Negros Occidental) Cities. It has also formed partnerships with other cable operators in Ginoog City and the municipalities of Balingasag, Don Carlos and Valencia. It is continuously expanding its coverage to the east and west sides of Misamis Oriental.

Parasat Cable carries most of the major programs available for cable viewing. Among the programs currently being carried are CNN, ESPN, STA, HBO, CINEMAX, ANC, VIVA, PINOY BLOCKBUSTER and a number of national and international programs.

It may seem obvious to drink during heavy physical activity. But many people underestimate the magnitude of their fluid loss. It is very difficult to avoid dehydration during a long race or when working in the heat because of the rate of sweat loss usually exceeds the rate of absorption of ingested fluids. The maximum rate of fluid absorption by the gastrointestinal tract during exercise is approx 800 ml (27 oz) per hour. The rate of fluid loss through seating can easily reach 1 liter (34 oz per hour and soar to 2 liters per hour under very strenuous conditions thus, it is not possible to drink enough to stay hydrated and dehydration will occur despite drinking plenty of fluid.

So guzzling a liter of water every hour, besides causing discomfort and bloating will not replenish lost liquids. Also, realize that the more dehydrated you get, the harder it is for your digestive tract to absorb what you drink.

In addition to the need to replenish lost water, you must also replenish lost electrolytes. An electrolyte deficiency can be just as dangerous as a water deficiency. Drinking only water, without a source of electrolyte, can dilute the remaining electrolytes in your bloodstream causing hyponatremia, low blood sodium.

Electrolyte deficiency can cause severe reactions, which can send you the hospital or even worse, during exercise, in the heat. More salt is lost in sweat per hour than is usually replaced by food and fluid by commercial sports drinks. Many athletes who rely solely on water and sport drinks for hydration are, to some level, prone to hyponatremia. It is estimated that up to 30% of the finishers of the Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon are both dehydrated and hyponatromic. Ultra distance athletes have similar track record.

Sweat contains between 2.25-3.4 grams of salt (Sodium Chloride) per liter and the rate of perspiration during strenuous exercise can easily average 1 liter per hour. Experts recommended that during a long, hot race, you should aim for a total sodium intake of about 1 gram per hour. To get 1 gram (1000 mg) of sodium in your body, you would need to drink 2-1/2 liters (84 ounces) of Gatorade every hour! To get one gram of sodium from table salt, you would need to ingest 2.5 grams (1 gram from sodium and 15 grams from chloride). A teaspoon of salt weighs approx. 66 grams. So you would need to consume 3/8 teaspoon of salt with a liter of water every hour.

To make sure the salt and water are properly absorbed, the beverage also needs to contain 4-8% sugar. But the beverage should not be too sweet. Sugar levels above 10% are poorly absorbed and can cause diarrhea. Commercial beverage and sports drink come up short on sodium and often have too much sugar. Coconut water is a better option. Although 1 liter of coconut water may or may not a full gram of sodium, extra sodium can be added, if desired, either in the water or separately. In addition, coconut water also replenishes lost trace of minerals, has the proper sugar content for optimum absorption, supplies amino acids and other nutrients which may also support proper hydration and to top it off, tastes good!

Daniel Mondschain was introduced to coconut water while training for his 5th Marathon. He said "Coconut water improved my performance. At first. I drank it only after my runs. I realized I was recovering more quickly and with less soreness."

Impressed with the results, he began drinking coconut water instead of water or sports beverage during his workouts. He drank only coconut water throughout the final 2 months of training and during the marathon. The result? "I set a personal record and beat my last time by 7 minutes. I had more energy, less fatigue and less pain the final miles and that made me see the difference.

Coconut water is now a permanent fixture in his training regimen. Commercial sports drink contains water, sugar (sucrose syrup), yellow ft (a chemical dye), ester gum (a stabilizer to keep oils in suspension in water used mostly in making varnish and soap), and Brominated vegetable oils. Brominated Vegetable Oil is a vegetable that is chemically bonded to Bromine, an emulsifier used in citrus flavored drinks to help flavors stay suspended and produce the cloudy appearance. Bromine is a halogen that blocks Iodine utilization in the thyroid and other tissues in the body. The adverse effect is usually fatigue, headaches, tremors, memory loss, hallucinations and seizures.

PINOYARTE.COM presents several pieces of each series or theme of an artist’s works -- arranged by color or on a thematic basis -- to make it easier for the browser searching for specific colors, themes, subjects or art styles.

As you travel through the PINOYARTE.COM website, you are first introduced to each artist and his development as one, the highlights of his career, as well as his stature in the art world -- as seen through his works spanning several years.

Each artist’s works are then presented series by series or theme by theme with variations within each series or a theme, for greater visual convenience.

We are presently highlighting the works of twenty-two (22) contemporary Filipino artists, with the number of works offered ranging from a high of 40 pieces to a low of 4 to 5 pieces, per artist.

Pinoy Steel endeavors to promote traditional Filipino and Southeast Asian blade forging and knife making while helping the craftsmen and their families live better lives. We aim to show the world Philippines craftsmen continue to produce quality knives and swords that can stand with the best out there.

Pinoy Steel was started in 2010. Throughout my childhood and adolescence, I had heard of the infamous Batangas balisong, but I could not get my hands on one no matter how hard I tried. I finally got my chance in 2009 when I came across several in a small handicrafts store in Manila. They were rough and far from the best quality available, but I didn't know that at the time and I bought two. They are still, today, among the most loved knives in my collection.

As my travels around the Philippines became more frequent and my collection grew, I realized the blades I was acquiring had to be shared. I also saw that Philippines blacksmiths and their families needed help. I am blessed to be able to both promote the industry's products and help the men and women that earn their livelihoods through crafting the best blades the Philippines has to offer. Pinoy Steel now proudly offers carefully selected blades and products from all around the Philippines, as well as other Southeast Asian nations.
